Hello there. Thanks for dropping by. Please put your feet up and relax - though you might want to brush the chair off first, I had pizza last night and I am, if nothing else, a messy bugger.
Here you'll find lots of information about me and my books. Most of it will probably be the truth as well, which is rare for the internet, in my experience. Enjoy!

Nick Spalding on the EU Referendum

Hmmm.

Decisions, decisions...

I don't know if you've noticed, but there's a vote coming up next week about whether the UK stays in the European Union or not. It's been on the news a couple of times, but you might have missed it.

According to the Remain camp, if we leave the EU it will herald the oncoming apocalypse.

According to the Leave camp, if we remain in the EU it will kick-start armageddon.

I'm not sure I'm insane enough to want either, to be honest with you. I quite like the world - by and large - and would prefer it if it didn't explode into a million pieces, just because I scratch an 'X' into a box on my way to Asda to buy some semi-skimmed and a loaf of Hovis.

I think it's fair to say that both sides of this argument have pretty much lost their minds in an effort to a) keep their jobs b) get someone else's job c) look good on TV d) make someone else look bad on TV e) all of the above.

For the past three or so weeks I've tried to reach a decision about which way I'm going to vote, and have been singularly unable to do so, because I've spent far too much time listening to people with their own agendas, and not enough time boiling this entire debacle down to brass tacks.

Today however, I have finally done that very thing - and because I am a writer, and therefore like the sound of my own voice almost as much as all those warring politicians, I am going to share my thoughts on the subject with you.

I'm not telling you which way I'm actually going to vote, because it is completely irrelevant to the point I'm about to make. Hard to believe I know, but bear with me...

I do not think remaining in the EU will lead to armageddon, and I do not believe leaving the EU will lead to the apocalypse.

In fact, chances are, whichever way we vote, life will continue on just as it has for the past several billion years. We'll all still get up on June 24th and complain that it's too cold for June, we'll all still sigh and roll our eyes at having to go into Asda again to buy more semi-skimmed and Hovis, and we'll all still wish we didn't have to worry about money, our health, or our happiness - along with the health and happiness of the people we love and care about.

There will be differences, I'm sure. But do any of us really believe that either choice is as disastrous/wonderful as we're being led to believe by our twitchy politicians, with their big fragile egos - snapping at each other in all those never-ending debates?

I'm willing to bet the answer to that question is no. I'm further willing to bet that the politicians think exactly the same thing underneath all that shouting and bluster - which is why it's been so hard for either side to convince us properly that their decision is actually the right one.

Remaining in the EU will have its advantages and its disadvantages.

Leaving the EU will have its advantages and disadvantages.

And that my friends, is the most honest thing you're going to read about the EU referendum. I guarantee it, because I am a very clever writer - and we also know a thing or two about having big, fragile egos.

So, how the hell do you vote?

Well, here it is, boiled down to brass tacks, with all the misinformation, misdirection, hyperbole, estimates, projections, and downright bullshit laid comprehensively aside:

If you want your life to be largely governed by a democratically elected government based in the United Kingdom, vote Leave.

If you want your life to be largely governed by a non-democratically elected bureaucracy in Brussels, vote Remain.

And I'm not saying one choice is better or worse than the other - I'm just saying that this is the choice you are making in the EU referendum vote.

A UK government can be as awful / wonderful as an EU one. There are no easy 'good vs bad' answers to this debate. It simply comes down to which of the two options above you prefer.

So, there you have it, Spalding has spoken.

...and not a moment too soon, really. This whole thing could have gone to the dogs if I hadn't stepped in, so I think we can all thank the universe that I did, eh?

If you like what I've had to say here, please share it with the people you like and admire on your chosen social media platform. If you didn't like what I've had to say, please share it with the people you despise and wouldn't share your semi-skimmed and Hovis with if they were the last bastards alive.

You have a very important choice ahead of you.

...to which the answer is always YES - you should buy that Nick Spalding book everyone keeps telling you about.

Also, please vote in the EU Referendum on Thursday, June 23rd. It's probably fairly important in the long run.

Best wishes,

Nick.

BRICKING IT now available in W.H Smith, so here's a competition!

Hi folks,

To celebrate BRICKING IT being sold in WH Smith over the Christmas period, I'm launching a competition to win signed paperbacks of my three biggest hits: LOVE FROM BOTH SIDES, FAT CHANCE, and, of course, BRICKING IT.

To be in with a chance of winning, here's what you have to do:

If you're in a branch of WH Smith and you see a copy of BRICKING IT lying around making the place look untidy, simply pick it up and take a picture of yourself with it. Or buy it, and take a shot with it outside.
Or, or,  if you're feeling shy, a picture of just the book will do, but a nice shot of your smiling face is much preferred!

Make sure to say what branch of WH Smith you're in, so people will know where to flock to pick up their very own copy. Ahem.

Then, all you have to do is upload the picture to Facebook and/or Twitter, making sure to tag me in it, or message me to let me know you've done it. I will then randomly chose a winner from all the entries.

Yes, this is your chance to win a unique, one of a kind, Spalding-esque gift by looking like a prize plum, taking photos of yourself and a bright red book in a major high street retailer, just weeks before Christmas!

So there you have it. I'll run the competition until Sunday December 27th, so get snapping!

...and don't forget, BRICKING IT will make a tremendous gift for any of your loved ones this Christmas. I know, I've asked them. They told me it would make their Yuletide dreams come true, and you wouldn't want to disappoint them now, would you?

Try not to look this much like a goon though, eh?

Of course, this entire thing is a blatant attempt to get it higher than 80...

BRICKING IT is out now!

Hi folks,

BRICKING IT is out now on Amazon!

Here is the cover, and all the usual details:

BRICKING IT

When siblings Dan and Hayley Daley inherit their late grandmother’s derelict Victorian farmhouse, it seems like a dream come true. All they have to do is fix the place up and sell it for a tidy profit!

Except—as anyone who has renovated an old house knows—things are never that easy.
The walls are rapidly crumbling around them, the architect is a certified lunatic, the budget is spiraling…and then there’s the disturbingly intelligent cow to worry about.

On top of all this, the renovation is being featured on a daytime reality TV show, and as soon as Great Locations presenter Gerard O’Keefe catches sight of Hayley’s first-floor balcony, he’s determined to woo her out of her ban on romance, whether she wants him to or not.

Will Dan and Hayley survive and sell up? Or will the whole thing collapse on them like a ton of bricks?

From bestselling author Nick Spalding comes a hilarious tale of life, love and dodgy plumbing.

OUT NOW! My newest book LOVE AMONG THE STARS! Jamie & Laura are back!

Click here to buy my latest book!

Kindle: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Love-Among-Stars-Book-ebook/dp/B00UFVKDYW

Paperback: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Love-Among-Stars-Nick-Spalding/dp/1508711194

LOVE AMONG THE STARS is the fourth book in the Love... series.

It's available as an ebook exclusively on the Amazon Kindle for just £1.99, and is also available from Amazon as a paperback for £5.99.

This is the book's cover and the description:

Sometimes, the hardest part of becoming a success is keeping a straight face...

Jamie & Laura Newman have recently become quite the successful and mildly wealthy couple, thanks to the fact they've managed to write a series of popular romantic comedies together. This has come as a complete surprise to the hapless pair, and is - needless to say - a turn of events neither are in the slightest bit equipped to deal with.

They get invited to posh events where they feel endlessly out of place, have long lost relatives turn up out of the blue, raise an aspiring diva for a daughter, and go on holiday to exotic places they really have no place being. It's enough to make anyone crawl under the nearest rock.

If you're Jamie, you also get to turn 40 - and there's not a damn thing he can do to stop it. As for Laura, well let's say that just because you can afford to purchase expensive beauty products, it doesn't necessarily mean that you should.

Money can't buy you happiness as the old saying goes. Nor can it stop the Newmans being the Newmans, with all their quirks, eccentricities - and the uncanny ability to embarrass themselves in public at the drop of a hat.

LOVE... AMONG THE STARS is the fourth book by Nick Spalding about Jamie & Laura, and is full of the warts-and-all, laugh out loud comedy you've come to know and love.

Website update - what do you think?

A friend pointed out to me the other day that www.nickspalding.com was available as a domain name, so I bought it. Frankly, I should have done it ages ago, but never got round to it because of my inherent laziness.

I've updated the site a bit to take advantage of the shiny new domain name, and with any luck I'll actually start posting more here now - though this is by no means a guarantee... due to the aforementioned laziness. Any actual proper news about my book releases will be posted as soon as I have any though, coz that's the important stuff.

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the site as it stands now, so by all means give me any feedback you might have. Also, if you'd like to follow me on Twitter or Facebook, then the links are to your right. You can also follow the site's updates by entering your email just below the social media links, and by subscribing to the site feed.

If you've got any questions or comments about my books, then don't hesitate to get in touch.

Thanks!

FAT CHANCE released - and straight into the Amazon Kindle top 5!

Fat Chance was released yesterday, and has powered straight into the Amazon Kindle 5:

As you can imagine I'm delighted, and am already picking out some new golden underwear.

...actually, it's not quite as easy as that. For me to start thinking about the purchasing of new underwear (golden or otherwise) the book needs to hang around in the upper echelons of the chart for a good few months, but hey - you can't have a better start to a book's long term success than such a high profile opening day.

Thanks to everyone who has bought a copy thus far!

Announcing my new book FAT CHANCE!

Hi folks,

My next book due for release is called FAT CHANCE, and will be out at the beginning of October.

Here's the cover, blurb and links to where you can pre-order it now!

Meet Zoe and Greg Milton, a married couple who have let themselves go a bit.

Zoe was a stunner in her college days, but the intervening decades have added five stone, and removed most of her self-esteem. Greg's rugby-playing days are well and truly behind him, thanks to countless pints of beer and chicken curry.

When Elise, a radio DJ and Zoe's best friend, tells them about a new competition, it seems like the perfect opportunity to turn their lives around. Fat Chance will pit six hefty couples against one another to see who can collectively lose the most weight and walk away with a £50,000 prize.

So begins six months of abject misery, tears, and frustration--that just might turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to them--in another laugh-out-loud look at the way we live now from bestselling author Nick Spalding.
